As Progressive Philly Council Members Talk Rent Control, NYC Says It Doesn't Work

It’s been known for years in study after study that rent control only forces affordable rental housing owners out of the market.

So, why are there still murmurs of “rent stabilization” at Philadelphia City Council?

New York City is already rethinking how to do away with rent control.

Councilmember, Wife Rental Issues Give Rental Owners A Bad Name

Hapco Philadelphia’s very existence is to promote licensed, legal, and safe rental property ownership.

So, it gives rental owners a bad rep when a councilmember doesn’t report his rental income and his wife has unlicensed rental properties.

Rent Hikes Easing As Tenant Incomes Can't Keep Pace

It’s sort of a chicken-and-egg thing.  Tenant incomes can’t keep up with rent hikes, because rental owners can’t keep pace with laws, costs, and fees imposed by Philadelphia City Council.

So, that means affordable housing rental owners can’t increase rent to cover their costs.

Those are some of the findings in a new Realtor.com rental report.

Lack Of Affordable Housing Pushes Tenants Behind On Rent, Survey Says

Hapco Philadelphia has told City Council for years that many rental owners don’t make enough in rent to keep up with the maintenance of their properties.

Throw in more than a year of unpaid rent during the pandemic eviction moratorium, and it’s a wonder tenants even have an apartment on which to fall behind in rent.

A survey of 6,000 renters will hopefully show council members that years of regulations, taxes, and fees have to be undone before rental owners disappear from Philadelphia, leaving tenants with no place to live.
