Media Seek HAPCO Philadelphia Reaction To Eviction Officer Incident

After a Philadelphia eviction officer was reportedly attacked during an eviction and shot a tenant in the leg, the City’s Landlord-Tenant Officer announced evictions would be paused pending an investigation.

HAPCO Philadelphia was the first to break the news of the eviction pause.  And WHYY Radio immediately reached out to HP to find out the impact on rental property owners.

HP President Greg Wertman is quoted as saying an eviction pause is just another hit to hard-working rental owners.

Municipal Court Halts Philly Evictions After Another Eviction Officer Shooting

HAPCO Philadelphia’s legal counsel, Paul Cohen, just learned from the City’s Landlord-Tenant Officer that all evictions scheduled for this week have been cancelled.

The announcement follows reports of a shooting involving a deputized contractor during an eviction at the Grace Townhomes in the Kensington section of Philadelphia.

A brief statement was issued by Landlord-Tenant Officer, Marisa Shuter:

“Evictions cancelled.

Due to exigent circumstances, the following evictions scheduled for this week cannot proceed at this time.

Once we receive further instructions from the court, we will get back to you.”

It’s not clear whether the eviction cancellations will extend beyond this week.  HAPCO Philadelphia and its legal counsel are monitoring developments.  Check back here for updates.

NY Supreme Court Rules Section 8 Inspections Unconstitutional

It’s a ruling that could have an impact on similar Housing Choice Voucher requirements in Philadelphia.

The New York State Supreme Court ruling says a required inspection of Section 8 rental properties violates the Constitution’s protections against unreasonable searches.

The ruling is the result of a lawsuit filed by an Ithaca rental property owner who contends rental owners have no choice but to consent to inspections when they participate in Section 8 programs
