A Philadelphia City Council committee on Wednesday unanimously voted to move forward a plan to extend parts of the Emergency Housing Protections Act into the new year.  

The eviction diversion program (mediation), slated to expire on December 31, will be extended through March 31, 2021. There had been an earlier proposal to extend the program through June 30, 2021.

Additionally, in a move that benefits rental property owners, the amendment would allow landlords to send a tenant a hardship repayment notice and file for the diversion program at the same time. There had been some confusion as to whether landlords, upon notifying tenants, had to wait thirty days before filing for mediation.

The amendment now heads to the full city council on December 3 and will likely pass December 10 before being signed by the Mayor.
